Academic Village Cottage

One of seven small cottages in Seaside, Florida’s Academic Village.

The project, which has been in development for almost two years, involves installing seven cottages within the Lyceum, an area within Seaside devoted to education and other civic activities. The cottages will house students and instructors who will travel to Seaside to participate in courses, seminars and workshops primarily in the areas of the arts, architecture/planning and health and well-being.

Who builds these things and are they able to ship them fairly easily by truck?

  • I have thought about this since about 1983; I would love to start something like this in Costa Rica, near the city of Heredia. I am neither a “planner” with formal training, nor have money but I have a lot of friends who would love to have a smaller home and others who’d just like “someplace to go” that is theirs. Are you a company who does this kind of thing? I don’t have land, but I do have a close friend in San Pedro de Poas, Alajuela, Costa Rica who owns several coffee plantations and parcels of land and this could be the start of a dream! The space in this home is actually probably larger than what I have now, which is about 300 sq ft.; I have a very limited pension under $1,000…however if I could make some sort of a business deal/proposal/idea to someone with the where withal to make this happen, I’d be available!
My connection with Costa Rica is that I was once married to a Costa Rican and we raised our children in San Francisco de Heredia for about 12 years and I have many beloved friends and family there and am hoping beyond hope to return to live there now in my 60’s. I am fully aware of the customs, language/slang, most laws, how to live and shop there daily, and my last 2 visits were May 2013 & April/May 2010.
    ~Thank you for your time.

My current project is to design and build a retreat center in NZ. I’m leaning towards ten tiny houses and a purpose-built lodge for workshops and meetings. This particular tiny house would be a great model for what I have in mind — thanks for posting!

I so so love this! thanks!

  • Nice. Looks very comfy, and spartan.

Still – where do they plug in and work? Inspiration strikes at any time, it’s good to have the tools to do your work. This is based on a model from the 1800’s which works for cooking, sleeping, and eating. But working on a laptop? A floor outlet, and a wood table with grommets would be all you need… in addition to wifi, of course.

I have been thru the Seaside development several times since it’s inception and have watched the price of properties approach two million in several cases. The buildings being brought in for this project may be small builds, but they will be very expensive if in step with everything else in Seaside.

Can someone mention the actual dimensions of the buildings? I couldn’t find it on their site either. Thankyou~

This is something that could really work in an infill housing project for houseless school children and their parents we are working on in Milwaukie, Oregon. Is there a place where we can get more information to nmake this work as inexpensively as possible?
